Types of Braces: Lingual

Braces technology has made a lot of progress in recent years, and there are now many types to choose from. Lingual braces, which sit on the backs of the teeth, are proving popular for people with concerns about the appearance of traditional braces.

What are Lingual Braces?

As you know, traditional metal braces placed on the front of the teeth, and straighten teeth via a system of brackets, wires and elastics. They straighten teeth over a period or months or years.

Lingual braces are very similar to traditional metal braces, only they are placed on the backs of the teeth, hiding them from view. As a result, lingual braces are virtually invisible to other people, and that's the primary reason patients choose them.

Another advantage of lingual braces is that if you play a wind instrument or a sport, lingual braces can adapt to it more readily than traditional braces.

While these custom-made braces typically cost more than traditional braces, and may make treatment take a little longer, for many people, the improved aesthetics are worth the additional cost and time.

Are Lingual Braces Right for You?

Not everyone can wear lingual braces. There are some challenges associated with them that aren't an issue with traditional braces. First of all, the teeth have to be long enough, so that there’s room to glue the braces on the inside of the teeth. In addition, people with severe bite problems cannot wear lingual braces.

Lingual braces can also pose a problem for your tongue, which will be in constant contact with these sharp metal objects. This can result in some significant irritation as your mouth grows accustomed to its new resident. It may require some recondition of the tongue thrust you automatically perform when you swallow.

Finally, lingual braces may make talking difficult when they’re first applied, so this is a factor you may want to take into consideration.
